Ultimately the whole story of Esther, the whole Bible, in fact, is all about Jesus.
This story is a small story, which is part of a much bigger story. Here 15 million Jews are going to be saved. But with Jesus, billions are saved.
In both circumstances, a mediator is required. The problem in Persia was that no one had access to the king. No one had a right to go before the throne, but Esther. She, alone, was the only possible mediator. She was both Persian royalty and Jewish. And she says, ‘If I perish, I perish. If I have to die to save my people, that’s fine.’
Does this sound familiar?
We have an even bigger problem though. Because of our sin and rebellion, we’re not in trouble from a mere king, but from the God of heaven. And because of that sin, we’re under a death sentence. We can’t save ourselves, we can’t do anything, we have no access to the throne.
So what does God do? He gets off His throne, one thing Xerxes never does. And came to us, as the man Jesus, and he lives without sin, and He says, ‘If I perish, I perish’, and He does die. He dies in our place, for our sins and reconciles man to God, because he is both man and God. He’s bigger and better than Esther.
Esther identified with her people by disclosing her race, but Jesus identifies with us by joining ours.
Esther had to come to King Xerxes on his throne, but our King Jesus, got off His throne and came to us.
Esther only had access to the king once, but Jesus gives us constant access to his throne of grace.
Esther was willing to die for her people, but Jesus actually died for all people!
And He’s alive now and seated on His throne once more. And we’re going to worship Him forevermore with songs, with communion, with tithes and offering and service!
We’re going to come before our King knowing that He will never kill us, in fact, He died for us and he welcomes us into His presence always.
