A friend recently shared the struggle he has with resentment when he looks at the lives of others on Facebook. My advice to him – get off Facebook. Does that sound extreme? Try this:
“If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.”
Killing sin is full on. Extreme measures are required. Even as extreme, where necessary, as quitting Facebook. This is difficult because of where Facebook has positioned itself in our lives. For many, life without Facebook is unimaginable. The ‘Fear of Missing Out’ factor makes leaving Facebook a terrifying prospect.
The pull of Facebook is immense – and for this reason, I strongly dislike it. It draws us in, even against our better intentions, even when we see that it’s impact isn’t positive.
Do you need to quit Facebook? Sure, your struggle might not be resentment. It might be lust. Or pride. Or envy. Or contentment. Or gossiping. Or something else. But if Facebook is causing you to sin, it might be time to take out the knife.
